Additive and Non-additive Ligand Effects in Mixed Halide-Carbonyl-Nitrile Osmium Complexes

In the series [OsX6]3-, [OsX5(CO)]2-, t ran~[OsX~(CO)~] l (X = Br) and the series t ran~[OsX~(MeCN)~] l , trans-[0sX4(MeCN)(CO)]1-, t rans[O~X~(CO)~l I , osmium IV/III and III/II redox couples shift two to three times further for the first introduction of CO than for the second, contrary to recent predictions; the corresponding halide to Oslll charge-transfer spectra (X = CI and Br) confirm the strongly non-linear accumulation of ligand electronic effects, in accord with preliminary X-ray data and near-IR crystal-field spectra.

Octahedral Os(II) complexes 1-5 with formula [Os(CO)3X(dbm)] are prepared through utilization of both solid-state pyrolysis and ligand exchange reactions. These complexes exhibit prominent 3pi-pi* phosphorescence with unusually long lifetimes (29-64 micros) and high quantum yields (0.08-0.13).
